Despite all this technological wizardry, despite an engine powerful enough to reverse the Earth's rotation, Ford's attempt to set a sub-7 minute lap time at the Nürburgring was thwarted by something as mundane as bad weather. Of course, Ford has assured us that they'll be back to try again. And I don't doubt they will. After all, when you've spent goodness knows how many millions developing a car capable of lapping the Nürburgring in under seven minutes, you're not going to let a bit of rain stop you. It's like climbing Everest, really. You don't give up just because you encounter a bit of snow. But here's the thing. Does it really matter? I mean, yes, it's impressive to be able to lap the Nürburgring in under seven minutes. It's a feat of engineering that deserves recognition. But let's be honest, how many Mustang GTD owners are actually going to take their car to the Nürburgring? I'd wager the closest most of them will get to a racetrack is watching Formula 1 on TV while sitting in their driveway with the engine running. And even if they did take it to a track, would they be able to extract anything close to its full potential? I'm reminded of a quote often attributed to Colin Chapman, the founder of Lotus: "Adding power makes you faster on the straights. Subtracting weight makes you faster everywhere." To which I'd add, "And driver skill makes you faster than both." The Mustang GTD, with all its power and technology, is a bit like giving a supercomputer to someone who only uses it to check their email. It's magnificent overkill, a triumph of engineering over common sense. And yet, I can't help but admire it. Because in the end, isn't that what supercars are all about? They're not rational, they're not sensible, and they're certainly not necessary. But they represent the pinnacle of what's possible when engineers are given free rein to create the fastest, most advanced car they can imagine. They're dreams made metal, aspirations given form. So yes, the Ford Mustang GTD failed to set a Nürburgring lap record. But in a way, that doesn't matter. What matters is that Ford tried. They took the iconic Mustang and turned it into something that can genuinely compete with the best Europe has to offer. They've created a car that, on paper at least, can go toe-to-toe with Porsches and Ferraris. And isn't that worth celebrating, regardless of lap times?
