A Decade-Long Conflict Since McLaren Automotive came to fruition 13 years ago, McLaren and Ferrari have been as deadly rivals on the road as they were in Formula 1. Many iconic battles over the last decade have been between Woking’s wonders and Maranello’s masterpieces. These include:· The 458 vs the MP4-12C.· The 488 vs the 720S.· The 296 vs the Artura.· And the most iconic is the LaFerrari vs the P1. Now today Woking and Maranello have laid on another iconic battle between their latest hybrid hypercars. The bombastic McLaren W1 and the aureate Ferrari F80. These twin-turbo, hybrid-powered, 217mph rocket ships bring about the latest advancements in racing and tech for use on the road. But the question we all wonder about is which one I should buy. Actually, you can’t buy either, they’re both sold out. So instead let’s ask on paper, which is superior. Well, today we here at F1rstMotors will compare these million-dollar monsters in a selection of categories and deliver what we believe is the ultimate hybrid hypercar. Exterior Aesthetics All hypercars are meant to draw the casual viewer in with their low-slung, look-at-me, Insta-grabbing styling. However, when it comes to design, Ferrari and McLaren have very different approaches. Ferrari uses the past for inspiration whilstMcLaren’s designers look to the future. The F80 is a sensation to behold but look closely and you notice a lot of elements from past Ferrari models have been used in the final design. The front is mostly based on the new 12 Cilindri, the butterfly dihedral doors and middle side profile are from the Enzo. The rear headlights and exhaust are from the 296 and the rear wing and side slashes on the engine cover, that’s pure F40. Yet somehow they’ve managed to blend all these classical elements together into an exceptionally good-looking car. Particularly in that red. The only details the W1 has from past models are the Senna-inspired windows and the P1-inspired rear buttresses. Every other detail is brand new from the S-duct up front to the elongated Active Long Tail wing at the rear. The biggest change are the brand new very unique anhedral gull-wing doors. (Interesting that the McLaren is the car here not to feature dihedral doors). Yet all these new futuristic details somehow work well to create a truly stunning masterpiece. Really it comes down to what you prefer, Rome-inspired Italian tribute artistic design or Star Trek-inspired British engineering. It comes down to a personal perspective. Winner: TIE Interior Trim Hypercars interiors matter not as much as their exteriors but they should give a sense of both quality and purpose to their interiors. Both these cars use similar features on their interiors with carbon-fibre chassis, square steering wheels and fixed seats integrated into the chassis. However, in the F80, it’s only the passenger seat that is fixed. The driver’s seat is still electrically operated, as are the window switches and thankfully iconic Manettino switch. Though tthese are the only features that are physical. Most of the switchgear and infotainment systems are touch screen based including the e-Mannettino touch pad that truly optimises the car’s performance. The cabin is minimalist and narrow heavily based on the 499P Le Mans racer. It gives that proper race car for the road feel. Despite its more futuristic stance, the W1’s interior is surprisingly more traditional. Whilst its fixed seats and low-slung cockpit definitely give a race car feel, the W1’s cabin is wider and more spacious. It also utilises far more physical buttons giving a more traditional feel when switching between the different driving modes. Really, it comes to personal perspective, both give a real race car for the road experience behind the wheel. The F80’s interior is more focused and futuristic contrasting the more traditional yet equally focused cabin of the W1. Winner: TIE Aerodynamics and Technology Hypercars are meant to be game changers in technology and aerodynamics, they are meant to both showcase and be a testbed for this new tech which will later trickle down into their more affordable road cars. Ferrari and McLaren have forever been leaders in this regard, with their hypercars. The F80 features an array of aerodynamic enhancements. Its s-duct, front grill, and rear engine bay holes are designed to channel air to its engine and its body. It also utilises a flat underbody and massive rear diffuser to suction the car into the road and high speed and cornering. The most noteworthy feature is its massive F40-inspired active rear wing which adjusts accordingly depending on the speed. At 155mph it produces 1050kg of downforce. Underneath its body, it utilises three electric motors, two driving the front wheels and one aiding its engine. Very similar in set-up to the SF90 making it all-wheel drive. However, unlike that car, the F80 can’t be switched into full EV mode. Something that the W1 interestingly can do from its brand new 1.38kWh EV unit. Unlike the Ferrari which uses three electric motors, the McLaren makes do with just one. This works alongside the engine to drive only the rear wheels. It’s the same e-Module unit you find on the Artura. The W1 uses an all-new Aerocell monocoque that enables full ground-effect aerodynamics, as well as a reduced wheelbase. The most noteworthy feature though is the Active Long Tail rear wing. Put the W1 in race mode and it extends 300mm rearwards to increase downforce without affecting drag overall though it makes only 1000kg of downforce. Both cars utilize 8-speed gearboxes and feature an array of advanced and clever aerodynamics. But there’s no denying the F80 is just that much more tech-focused, that much more aerodynamically proficient. Therefore it wins this round. Winner: F80 Horsepower from Twin-Turbo Weapons Hypercars are made by their engines. These specialized and bespoke units are what set them apart from their supercar counterparts. Taking horsepower to new levels and finding new ways of delivering that horsepower. In the past Ferraris, most elite cars were fitted with their iconic V12. But the F80 changes the status quo quite a fair bit. Instead of a V12, it utilizes a 2.9L twin-turbo V6 found in both the 499P and the 296 GTB. Though in this it's turned up to 11, revs up to 9200rpm and the result is 890 horsepower and 627 lb-ft of torque. But that’s not all. The F80 is after all a hybrid, with not one but three electric motors. Combined, these produce 310 horsepower and 123 lb-ft of torque. All in tandem, this car churns out 1200 horsepower and 750 lb-ft of torque. Making it the most powerful car in Ferrari’s nearly 80-year history. But incredibly not as powerful as the W1. This uses a much bigger engine, a brand new MHP-8 4.0L twin-turbocharged V8 that also revs up to 9200rpm. However due to its bigger size, it produces 928 horsepower and 664 lb-ft of torque. And though the W1 only uses a singular electric motor, they’ve managed to extract 347 horsepower and 324 lb-ft of torque. All combined, a whopping 1275 horsepower and 988 lb-ft of torque. That’s 75 more than the F80 and more than any McLaren ever made. There’s no contest in this category, Woking has trumped Maranello. Winner: W1 Weight Hypercars can’t just deliver rapid, earth-ripping performance from their bespoke engines and arsenal of aerodynamics. They also need to be light. Therefore manufacturers like Ferrari and McLaren have to ensure the materials used not only add strength for speed but by nature are light. Both cars make excessive use of carbon fiber on both their chassis and bodies. However, the F80's extra electric motors and subsequent all-wheel drive system means it weighs 1525kg, 126 kilos than the W1 weight of 1399kg. The result, the F80 has a power-to-weight ratio of 786 hp per tonne, significantly less than the W1’s 911 hp per tonne. McLaren wins this round easily. Winner: W1 Performance The result of Hypercars having bespoke high horsepower tuned engines, low weight, advanced aerodynamics, and cutting edge tech are there to sing the song of speed. Hypercars aren’t just jet-fighter fast, they’re so rapid, that they rip a hole in time. You would imagine that with less weight, more power, and more torque, the W1 would trounce the F80 in a straight line. Not so fast, both cars interestingly have a top speed of 217mph. Which in truth makes no faster than their legendary predecessors, the LaFerrari and P1 respectively. However, with its all-wheel-drive system and additional EV motors, the F80 is quicker in terms of sheer acceleration. 0-62mph takes a blistering 2.1 seconds, over half a second more rapid than the W1's 2.7 seconds. It’s also worth noting that around the iconic Fiorano circuit, primarily because of its all-wheel drive system, the F80 is 4.4 seconds quicker than the LaFerrari. The W1 is only 3 seconds quicker than the track-focused Senna. In a shocking twist of events, Ferrari have won this round. Winner: F80 Excitement Hypercars aren’t just about sheer speed and advanced tech. They are also meant to deliver something back to the driver. To give him a feeling that what he’s driving is something truly special and raw. Undoubtedly both these are technical marvels to destroy race tracks but in terms of how they make you feel, there is one subtle difference. The F80 uses electric power-assisted steering and delivers its 1200 horsepower to all four wheels. The W1 uses hydraulic power-assisted steering and delivers its 1275 horsepower solely to the rear wheels. Whilst neither car has been driven to come out with a solid it’s easy to see the difference that results. The F80 will almost certainly be easier to manage, easier to live with, and easier to push on the track. But one could argue that, as a result, the W1 is more exciting, more connected, and more visceral. A car you as a driver have to work more with to get the best out of. And as a result, it’s the more challenging, the more thrilling, the more exciting. The winner of this round. Winner: W1 Exclusivity Hypercars are meant to be bespoke and specialized tools only bought by the elite. They are meant to make regular supercars look tame and affordable. To make the viewers crave, desire, and envy their owners. Historically McLaren has always produced fewer cars compared to Ferrari but with these two it’s not even close. Though both are sold out, there are almost half the number of W1s in the world as there are F80s. 399 W1s to be exact compared to 799 F80s. In fact, there will be the same number of F80s built as there were LaFerraris and Enzos combined. In terms of exclusivity and rarity, it's once again a triumph for Woking. Winner: W1 Value Now and in the Future Being so bespoke, so fast and so technologically Hypercars are by no means cheap. You have to be beyond CEO levels to afford them. In the case of McLaren and Ferrari, even that’s not enough to buy a W1 or an F80. You have to be a committed customer who’s owned several of their most elite to be considered worthy. In terms of value right now despite being more rare and more powerful, the W1 is shockingly better value. It starts from $2.6 million compared to the F80S near the $4 million asking price. And that’s before you’ve considered options. Howeverthere’s another factor worth considering. Hypercars aren’t just meant to be valuable now. They are meant to be so specialized and loved that in ten or fifteen year’s time, they’ve gained value rather than lost it. Historically, ignoring the F1, Ferraris has always commanded higher values than McLaren due to the more historic nature of their brand. At present a LaFerrari is worth almost triple that of the P1. Similarly will be the case with the F80 and the W1. So whilst the W1 appears better value for now, in the future, it’s the F80 that will be the better investment. In this category, it’s a tie between Woking and Maranello. Winner: TIE Heritage: What they celebrate A lot of hypercars are built by enthusiasts or to try one-up the established elites. But in the case of Ferrari and McLaren, their hypercars are meant to set new legacies. To surpass bars set by their legendary predecessors. Both manufacturers have rich histories in racing and in automobiles but there’s one undeniable truth. The W1 follows on from two of the greatest hypercars ever made, the revolutionary F1 and the game-changing P1. But the simple fact is the F80 has a stronger lineage. It is the fifth in a high-class lineage of prancing horse masterpieces. It follows on from legends like the F40, F50, Enzo and LaFerrari. And then we have to consider what weight each of them holds. The W1 was created to celebrate 50 years of McLaren’s first constructor championship. But the F80 was created to celebrate 80 years of Ferrari’s racing heritage. No contest here Maranello clearly wins. Winner: F80 Conclusion By the narrowest of margins of 7:6, Woking has triumphed over Maranello. Based on these facts and figures, the W1 is superior to the F80. However, the real truth comes when these two masterpieces go head to head. And we here at F1rstMotors promise that when the first W1 and F80 land in the Middle East, we will conduct a thorough comparison test to deduce which is superior. But for now, let’s celebrate these latest Marvels from Maranello and Woking and what they represent.
