The C8 Corvette: The biggest step up since the Corvette’s debut For over 70 years the Chevrolet Corvette has been America’s most iconic and beloved car, minus the Ford Mustang. And for 66 of those years, the recipe remained relatively the same. A large V8 up front, drive to the rear wheels and a manual or often rubbish automatic in the middle. As a result, no Corvette was ever really comparable to its rivals from Europe or Japan. That was until the C8 Stingray debuted in 2020 and changed the Corvette’s status quo. It was the first Corvette to permanently use a Tremec dual-clutch, rather than a manual or automatic. And the first to be offered worldwide with Right Hand Drive. But the biggest change was its engine moved from being slung out front to being balanced in the middle. With these changes, Chevy had turned the Corvette from a sunset boulevard cruiser to a serious entry-level supercar. One that was now capable of surpassing the equivalent alternatives from Europe or Japan. And with each iteration of the C8 came an advancement never seen before on a Corvette. The C8 Z06 was the first to use a flat-plane crank V8 that produced more power than the old supercharged unit. And the C8 E-Ray became the first-ever hybrid Corvette and the first to utilize all-wheel drive. And with the latest ZR1, that need to bring about change for the Vette hasn’t changed. The ZR1: First Ever Twin-Turbocharged “Vette” For the last 54 years, the ZR1 has been the peak of the Corvette range. The most powerful, most desirable, and fastest variant of the Corvette. The equivalent to a 911 GT2 or an AMG Black Series. Usually, this involved fitting the largest supercharger possible to the standard Vettes V8. However, with the C8 iteration, Chevy decided to go a bit further. At the heart of the car sits an all-new 5.5l twin-turbocharged V8 known as the LT7. Making it the first-ever Corvette to utilize turbocharging. The result is a stratospheric 1064 horsepower and 828 lb-ft of torque. That makes this solely petrol-powered American leviathan more powerful than a fully hybridized Lamborghini Revuelto and Ferrari SF90. As a result, Chevy claims a 0-62mph takes 2.5 seconds which for a solely rear-drive American car is deeply impressive. But as impressive as the expected grip and handling. The ZR1 features a split rear window to allow effective airflow over the rear of the car (as well as a call-back to the split rear window design of the Iconic C2 Stingray). It also features a Magnetic Ride, Michelin Sport Cup 2 tires, and an optional ZTK Package. This package involves a large front splitter, carbon fiber side skirts, and an enormous rear wing that together gives 1200 pounds of downforce. This coupled with the car’s rapid dual-clutch gearbox and super sticky tyres results in serious grip through the corners. Yet despite all these impressive records, this car is set to cost less than $200,000. It is truly the bargain of the century. Especially with what occurred recently at the Papenberg High-Speed Oval in Germany. The Test in Question: The Papenberg Oval Chevy predicted the ZR1’s top speed was over 215mph, but to find out exactly how fast, they headed to the Papenberg High-Speed Oval in North West Germany. This 7.6-mile-long 50-degree angle banked high-speed oval has been specially designed for top-speed runs. More so than any NASCAR track or VW’s Ehra-Lessien track. Chevy’s engineers went to town with this run. They chose October 15th, 2024 as the cooler air on this day aided the car’s massive turbochargers to ensure maximum output. They used a non-ZTK ZR1 with a much smaller rear wing and a more aerodynamic proficient body to reduce drag. To ensure the car truly achieved its potential, they engaged the ZR1’s bespoke Top-Speed Mode. Which optimizes the suspension and hunkers the car down for even further reduced drag. At the wheel sat GM president Mark Reuss and for Moral Support Nascar Legend Jeff Gordon. And it was agreed for confirmation the car complete two runs in each direction, to account for wind and track gradient. And then it was time to begin the test. 233mph: Forget Supercar, The ZR1 is a full-on Hypercar Before the official run, several test runs were done by Reuss, Gordon, and other Corvette engineers. And incredibly all were registering at over 230mph. Reuss on average hit 231mph before it was time for the big test. Entering the 2.5-mile straight at 222mph, its V8 screaming in sixth gear, Reuss buried his foot into the carpet and the ZR1 truly took off. And as the world changed to a blur, the speed out reading was revealed, 233mph. (Which through the second test was validated). Frankly an astonishing achievement for any car but frankly unbelievable for the ZR1. Because remember this isn’t some bespoke, multi-million dollar one-off, gold-plated hypercar. It doesn’t use batteries or some clever hybrid trickery and hasn’t taken years of development and engineering. It is just a variant of a 70+-year-old production sports-turned-supercar. Solely utilizes a non-hybrid twin-turbo V8, power going to the rear wheels, and a price tag of less than $200,000. And yet it's faster than most of the elite hypercars we all would sell our Kidneys to own. It is truly an astonishing achievement and GM ought to be proud. With the ZR1, America hasn’t just beaten Europe, it has truly crushed it. The Future of the Corvette Line: Why Europe and Japan should step up their game Despite its amazing achievements, the ZR1 surprisingly won’t be the top-of-the-range Vette for long. Spy shots have revealed an even more powerful C8 called the Zora after legendary Corvette engineer Zora Arkus-Duntov. This car is rumored to utilize an electric motor alongside its twin-turbo V8, driving all four wheels. Expected to be way more powerful than the ZR1, the Zora probably won’t just set hypercar speed, it will likely obliterate them. But for now, the ZR1 is king. It isn’t just merely the fastest Corvette or the fastest car General Motors has ever built, it is the fastest non-limited production car on sale right now. 233mph for less than $200,000 and if you have the funds, you can all have one. It’s no limited-run Ferrari or hard-to-get Porsche. It truly redefines the supercar rule book and is a symbol of how far American engineering has come. For decades European and Japanese cars have trounced equivalent American rivals for speed, refinement, and redefining the rule book. But today, Europe seems so focused on emissions that minus a few names they no longer seem to want to push boundaries. And bar a few names, Japan no longer makes anything as desirable as it once did. In this gap, America has not only stepped up its game but has now surpassed Europe and Japan. Hennessey has set multiple track and top speed records with the Venom, Tesla is still atop the EV market and now Chevy has set all-new high bars with the ZR1. And with nothing stopping them, Europe and Japan truly need to knuckle down and forget emissions to play catch up.
