The following Z06 and E-Ray also made significant steps for the Corvette marquee, the prior being the first to use a Flat-Plane Crank and the latter being the first to use a Hybrid Setup. But the 2025 ZR1 only furthers this game-changer status quo. It’s the first Corvette to utilise turbocharging through its all-new 5.5l twin-turbocharged V8. The results of all these changes were shown in a recent test. At the Papenberg High-Speed Oval in North West Germany on the 15th of October 2024, the ZR1 set an astonishing top speed record. With General Motors President Mark Reuss at the wheel, the car achieved an astonishing 233mph, making it faster than many multi-million dollar hypercars. And now the ZR1 has set another impressive feat in performance. 0-62mph in 2.3 seconds: A Hell of an Achievement You read that correctly, 2.3 seconds 0-62mph. Plus a quarter mile figure of 9.6 seconds at 150mph. That’s more than just supercar speed, that’s full-blown million-dollar hypercar performance. Partly this performance is achieved by the monstrous twin-turbo, 1064 horsepower V8. But also it's down to the tech and aerodynamics. The ZR1 features a split rear window to allow effective airflow over the rear of the car (as well as a call-back to the split rear window design of the Iconic C2 Stingray) as well as Magnetic Ride Control, Michelin Sport Cup 2 tyres and an optional ZTK Package. This package involves a large front splitter, carbon fibre side skirts and an enormous rear wing that together give 1200 pounds of downforce. In addition, the car’s mid-engine means the rear wheels are pushed downwards into the ground, improving traction. In addition, it features a sophisticated launch control system and a rapidly changing dual-clutch gearbox. All this means is in its drag mode, this car sprints off the line faster than a bullet. The New King of Benchmark Performance When Nissan launched the GT-R two decades ago, it revolutionised the performance car sector. Here was a machine that outperformed cars costing nearly five times as much, both in acceleration and in track performance. Yet it was more practical and attainable than any of the $250,000 supercars it overshadowed. Now that recipe has followed with the Corvette ZR1. Here is a variant of a 70+-year-old sports car that will go on sale for under $200,000. That doesn’t use a clever hybrid setup, an advanced All-Wheel-Drive system or active aerodynamics. Relatively speaking, it is rather old-school. And yet, its 0-62mph and top speed figures easily outperform hypercars, which cost eight times more. The only thing this incredible car doesn’t have as of yet, is any official lap records. But knowing Chevrolet, it won’t be long until it has that in the bag as well. More than likely they’ll aim for the Nürburgring. But for now let’s just celebrate the fact that this bargain basement supercar has at a stretch made all its rivals from Europe and Japan seem pointless, expensive and unnecessary. God Bless America.
