Tesla is yet to offer a super-affordable EV. Currently, the most affordable Tesla is the Model 3 Rear Wheel Drive. It commands a base price of $38,990. Hence, a new entrant at the $30,000 ballpark would be a game-changer. The current sub-$35K EV market consists of cars with subpar performance, range, and/or quality. Elon Musk hopes to see more than 100 million Teslas on the road, by the end of the decade. To achieve this milestone, the affordable Model 2 is quite necessary. At the company's latest financial result call, he reassured that the Model 2 will arrive in early 2025. At the right price point, this new entry-level Tesla could accomplish high volumes. Tesla Model 2: Powertrain, Range And Performance Code-named Project Redwood, the Tesla Model 2 would be the most affordable SUV from Tesla. Tesla will build the Model 2 on an all-new platform. It could utilize the more efficient 4680 cylindrical battery pack. The 48-volt architecture introduced in the Tesla Cybertruck could be carried over. We expect the upcoming Tesla Model 2 to offer around 250 miles (402 km) of range in its base variant. Higher-end variants might offer up to 325 miles (523km) of range on a single charge. As for performance, we expect 0–60 numbers in the 6.0 seconds ballpark for the base variant. At this point, all these are speculations, and we can't be sure of anything. However, based on the very little info we have, these are our expectations. Tesla Model 2: Pricing And Competition The only great EV that can be bought new for less than $30,000 is the Chevy Bolt EV. Sure, the quintessential Nissan Leaf is there. But the base S trim of the Leaf, priced just below the $30K mark, offers a minuscule range of 149 miles. The lower-priced Bolt EV, on the other hand, delivers up to 259 miles of EPA-certified range. Considering these circumstances, the new Tesla Model 2 would find immense success. If specced and priced correctly, it could be a groundbreaking product. While considering prices and competitors in the UK, things are different. The Model 3 is around $12K more expensive in the UK. There it is priced at around £39,935 ($51,493). Hence, a lot of other EVs undercut its base price tag. The Volkswagen ID.3 is one among them, bearing a £29,565 base price tag. That is where the new Tesla Model 2 could make a difference. Pricing it on par with the ID.3, Kia Niro EV, Hyundai Kona EV, Renault Megane E-Tech, and Volvo EX30 would be the ideal move.
