Alfa Romeo is changing gears. The Stelvio is getting a complete redesign, set to be revealed this year, with a market debut in 2026. A new Giulia will follow the same year. Both will still be built in Italy. These models were expected to go fully electric. Not anymore. Alfa Romeo now says both will come with hybrid powertrains, part of a shift away from an EV-only future. It’s a move many automakers are making as electric car sales slow down. The STLA Large platform allows Alfa to mix things up, so buyers won’t be limited to electric options. CEO Santo Ficili confirmed the update in a LinkedIn post. He stepped in last year after Stellantis reshuffled its leadership team. With the Stelvio first launched in 2018 and the Giulia dating back to 2017, both models are long overdue for a fresh start. That’s not the only shift. Alfa had planned to ditch combustion engines by 2027, but that’s out the window. The Stelvio and Giulia will now be hybrids, running a gas-electric powertrain on Stellantis’ STLA Large platform—the same one under the Dodge Charger and Jeep Wagoneer S. The big question is what engine Alfa will use. There’s no official word, but the 3.0L twin-turbo Hurricane inline-six is the obvious choice. It already powers the Dodge Charger Sixpack and Jeep Wagoneer, putting out 420 horsepower in base form and up to 550 hp in high-output trim. There’s a chance Alfa could go for a four-cylinder hybrid, like the Tonale, but the six-cylinder makes more sense for performance. Alfa Romeo Expands Hybrid Lineup as Quadrifoglio Goes Fully Electric Both models will still roll off the line in Cassino, Italy, where Alfa also builds the current Stelvio and Giulia. The Maserati Grecale, which shares some DNA with the Stelvio, comes from the same plant and already has an electric version. While Alfa is keeping hybrids for now, its high-performance Quadrifoglio models are still on track to go fully electric. Some rumors suggest they’ll push close to 1,000 hp, but Alfa hasn’t confirmed anything yet.
