The ZR1X’s design We’ve known for the last year that, contrary to its predecessors, the C8’s lineage would not end with the ZR1 model like all previous Corvettes. Instead, several spy shots at the Nürburgring revealed that a more powerful and potent Vette was coming. We all assumed this car would be called the Zora after Zora Arkus Duntov, an engineer who innovated the Corvette during the 1950s and 1960s. However, the new car ended up being called the ZR1X, a massive upgrade over the regular ZR1. The ZR1X features wider intakes, a longer rear deck for improved airflow, additional cooling ducts, flared rear haunches and the optional ZTK pack that adds a carbon rear wing, a more extended front splitter, dive planes, stiffer springs, Michelin Cup 2R tyres, and track-focused aero. Inside, the ZR1X features the all-new redesigned interior that will become prominent on all C8s from 2026 onwards. There’s a slick triple-screen layout, a 14-inch digital cluster, 12.7 centre screen, a 6.6-inch control panel and gone are the controversial button walls. The ZR1X also boasts new 16.5-inch, 10-piston Alcon Carbon Ceramic Brakes. The whole design was sculpted in a wind tunnel and done to maximise performance. The ZR1X’s Powertrain The ZR1X uses the same 5.5l twin-turbo LT7 V8 that generates 1,064 horsepower and 828 lb–ft of torque. However, like the E-Ray, it also features a 1.9kWh electric motor that generates 186 horsepower and 145 lb-ft of torque. In total, the ZR1X generates a mind-boggling 1250 horsepower and nearly 1000 lb-ft of torque, all of which is sent to all four wheels. However, due to the hybrid drivetrain, it weighs a whopping 1,780kg. Despite this, this is a monstrously fast car. Engage the push to pass button and Chevrolet says this monster will go from 0-62mph in a blistering 2.0 seconds, making it more rapid than a McLaren W1 or a Ferrari F80. And though Chevy have yet to reveal the top speed, it should be noted that the standard ZR1 maxed at over 230mph, so more than likely, the ZR1X will blitz that top speed record. Now there’s no denying the ZR1X will be fast in a straight line, but the C8 Corvette has proven that it is equally as capable as demolishing a racetrack. Certainly, using an 8-speed dual-clutch Tremac gearbox, the all-wheel drive system, the active aerodynamics and instant response from the hybrid drive, this car will certainly corner with a sufficient amount of grip and go. However, it must be said, weighing nearly 1.8 tonnes, one could argue that it may lack the delicacy of its European equivalents. Interestingly, the ZR1 does not feature a plug-in hybrid system; instead, it generates electricity from regenerative braking and in maximum attack mode. Also in third gear, Chevrolet claims the ZR1X will generate over 1G through its rapid acceleration. Why the ZR1X is a True Money for Value Great It’s pretty clear from the performance specs that the new ZR1X will be quite the car, but what’s most astonishing is the price. Because this monster, that is quicker in acceleration and faster than both a Ferrari F80 and a McLaren 21, that can hit 150mph in 9 seconds, costs a mere $178,000. The optional ZTK package will increase that cost to nearly $185,000, but still, compared to its rivals, it’s a bargain. There’s no denying the Corvette’s run throughout the years has had its bumps, but the C8 range has proven itself a performance benchmark against Europe’s finest. The fact that what started out as a budget supercar is now capable of beating the ultimate hypercars speaks volumes. It’s proof that overall, the C8 range is the best Corvette to have ever existed, and the ZR1X is simply the peak of the C8. The best Corvette ever.
