Well, well. It seems the madmen at Mercedes-AMG have finally let their latest creation out of its cage. The 2026 Pure Speed AMG has been spied on prowling around the streets of Italy. And what's more, it is every bit as bonkers as I'd hoped it to be. Now, if you've been living under a rock (or perhaps inside a sensible family hatchback), let me bring you up to speed. The Pure Speed AMG is Mercedes' attempt at making a car that is "sensible yet utterly brilliant" in my books, and they seem to have done it. It's part of their new Mythos series, which I can only assume is Greek for "a lot of money." The kicker here is that this isn't a one-off concept car that will be destined for an auto museum some day. Oh no, Mercedes is actually going to build 250 of these roofless wonders. And when I say roofless, I mean it. They've binned the windscreen, too, because who needs to see where they're going when you're having this much fun? The test mules we've spotted are wearing enough camouflage to hide a small army, but there's no disguising that distinctive silhouette. It's low, it's wide, and it looks about as practical as a chocolate teapot. In other words, it's perfect. Now, Mercedes is being typically tight-lipped about the specifics, but given that the PureSpeed AMG is based on the current AMG SL, we can make some educated guesses. Expect a twin-turbocharged V8 with enough power to alter the Earth's rotation, all-wheel drive (because with that much power and no roof, you're going to need it), and a price tag that'll make your eyes water. But the real party piece? That's got to be the F1-inspired halo safety system. Yes, you read that right. Mercedes has taken a look at their F1 car and thought, "You know what? Our road cars need more of that." It's like they're daring you to try and flip it. Mercedes says they're putting the 2026 PureSpeed AMG through more than 1,800 miles of testing. While I know that sounds paltry, consider that each mile probably takes one year off a test driver's life, and then let's have a chat. After they're done terrorizing the locals in Italy, the test team is heading to the Nardo Ring. I can only imagine the grin on the face of the engineer who got that assignment. "What's that, boss? Do you want me to drive this roofless, windscreen-less marvel around one of the fastest test tracks in the world? Well, if I must..." And if you, like me, are wondering who on earth is going to buy one of these, have no fear. According to a rep from Mercedes, the 2026 Pure Sport AMG is intended for "enthusiasts and collectors." I took for his meaning to say, "People with garages bigger than their houses." But you know what? In a world of moronic electric SUVs and autonomous pods, there's something to be said for the 2026 Pure Speed AMG. The 2026 PureSpeed AMG - is proof that Mercedes engineers still know how to party. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm off to check down the back of the sofa for a few million quid. I've got a car to order.
