BMW has just announced something rather extraordinary. Over the next 24 months, they're going to update or launch 40 models. Forty. That's roughly one new reveal every month and a half for two solid years. And the reason for this automotive blitzkrieg? The iX3 and its Neue Klasse architecture are so advanced that everything else in BMW's lineup now feels like it was designed by someone using an abacus. According to Mike Reichelt, head of BMW's Neue Klasse program, the platform represents "quantum leaps in technology" so significant that without integrating it across the portfolio, the current lineup "will feel like an old portfolio." That's BMW basically admitting that their own cars, some of which were launched just a couple of years ago, are about to become yesterday's news. "With the Neue Klasse, we've made so much progress it's like we skipped a model generation," Reichelt told Autocar. "So we have to do it across the range." This isn't about making cars look different. BMW isn't planning to change the body structures of existing models, which means your 3 Series will still look like a 3 Series and your X5 will still look like an X5. What's changing is everything underneath the sheet metal, all the bits you can't see but absolutely can feel. BMW will integrate "the most relevant aspects of Neue Klasse: the design language, Panoramic iDrive, ADAS [advanced driver-assist systems], all the digital things." This includes enhanced cybersecurity, improved over-the-air updates, and AI features that will fundamentally change how these cars operate.
