Bugatti’s customized Chiron is named the 55 1 of 1, and honors Jean Bugatti's personal Type 55 Super Sport. Jean Bugatti, a talented designer, created several cars for the company his father (Ettore Bugatti) built. The latest creation is from Bugatti's Sur Mesure bespoke department — and celebrates one of Jean's iconic designs. Distinctive Livery The Chiron 55 1 of 1 features the same black-and-yellow livery as Jean Bugatti's Type 55 Super Sport. The original Type 55 was the first Bugatti to carry the Super Sport title. It had a 2.3-liter inline-8 engine from the Type 51 race car. This engine allowed the Type 55 to reach a top speed of 111 mph, which was impressive in the early 1930s. Only 38 Type 55 Super Sports were made, and none matched the look of Jean Bugatti's personal car. The modern Chiron captures this unique two-tone style. It sports yellow doors, front, and hood to match the theme, with a matching black centerline and bodywork. Custom Elements The Chiron 55 1 of 1 has several custom elements. There is a hand-painted "55" pattern starting at the headlights and fading into the front fenders. The homage car sports black wheels that have yellow-colored center caps, in keeping with the theme. Also, the car displays a “55 1 of 1” inscription underneath the wing. Interior DesignInside, the two-tone theme continues. The black leather upholstery is paired with yellow embroidered accents on the headrests and door panels. The door panels also feature a version of the fading "55" pattern from the exterior. PerformanceThe Chiron Super Sport 55 1 of 1 is based on the Chiron Super Sport grade. This means it has a quad-turbocharged 8.0-liter W-16 engine producing 1,578 horsepower. It can go from 0-60 mph in less than three seconds and has a top speed capped at 273 mph. Availability and PriceThe line of Chiron Super Sports has, as expected, sold out. However, when new, it retailed for well above three million dollars. Also, note that Bugatti has not publicly announced the price of the custom bodywork on the Sur Mesure cars. The 55 1 of 1 was commissioned by a buyer in Dubai. If you want to look at Jean’s personal Type 55, you’ll have to make a trip to Mulhouse. There, you can see it at the Musée National de l'Automobile, out of the 600-so cars that the museum houses, around a hundred are Bugattis. Many of these used to be owned by F. Schlumpf, a businessman, who collected Bugattis until the 1970s. The Type 55 homage Chiron is a testament to the legacy that Bugatti holds.
