We just got the 12Cilindri. Then we got the F80 (which, despite the hate, I personally love). And thus, in what might be the most exciting news for Ferrari owners since someone invented ceramic coating, the long-awaited 296 VS (Versione Speciale) is set to make its debut on April 29th, 2025. And according to various sources on FerrariChat, it's going to be quite something. According to FerrariChat member Maximus1973, who has proven reliable with previous Ferrari intel, the VS will be more than just another special edition with some fancy stripes. "The VS model will take cues from the new F80," he reports, suggesting we'll see similar five-spoke wheels, dual rear spoilers, and a completely enclosed engine bay - much like Ferrari's latest hypercar. But here's where it gets interesting. The word from Maranello is that this won't just be a cosmetic exercise. The 296 VS will reportedly be lighter than the standard car, and that twin-turbo V6 hybrid powertrain will be turned up past its current 819 horsepower. Given that the regular 296 already accelerates like it's being chased by an angry mob, this should be... interesting. The allocation process, as usual with special Ferraris, is causing quite a stir. According to Jo Sta7 on FerrariChat, the primary prerequisite is being an original 296 owner who has kept their car. Here's what a “regular” 296 stands at right now (yes, you can buy it from us): Though as Gasoline Dreams points out, "there will be exceptions more so with this model than past ones," but you'll still need a solid relationship with Ferrari to even be considered. Ferrari is also planning a Piloti edition, set to be unveiled at Le Mans, featuring livery inspired by either their GT3 or Le Mans racers. No word on pricing yet, but given that a regular 296 starts at around $330,000, don't expect much change from half a million dollars. Now, if you'll excuse me, I need to go befriend my local Ferrari dealer. Though I suspect even bringing them coffee every morning for the next year wouldn't get me on the list for one of these.
