Ferrari, a company that has spent seven decades perfecting the art of internal combustion, is about to launch an electric car. This is a bit like finding out the Pope has decided to become a Buddhist, or discovering that Gordon Ramsay is opening a vegan fast-food chain. It simply doesn't compute.But the prancing horse clearly understands that without the spine-tingling wail of a naturally aspirated V12 or the violent kick in the kidneys from a perfectly executed gearshift, a Ferrari EV would be about as emotionally stirring as a vacuum cleaner – albeit one that costs half a million dollars and goes very, very fast. So what's their solution? According to recently uncovered patent applications, they're going to fake it. All of it. The engine sounds, the gearshifts, the lot. The Great Italian Pretender: How Ferrari Plans To Fake GearshiftsThe first patent describes a system that uses an electric motor to simulate the torque output of an internal combustion engine and the gearshifts of a traditional transmission. In simple terms, Ferrari is deliberately going to make its electric motors less efficient by artificially restricting the torque output to mimic the power curve of a petrol engine. Then, when the driver pulls on the paddle shifters, the system will briefly interrupt power delivery to simulate a gearshift before "changing up" to a different torque map. This is madness. It's like buying a smartphone and then installing an app that makes it take 30 seconds to boot up, just to remind you of your old Nokia. Or buying a modern refrigerator but installing a small puddle-making device underneath it to replicate the defrosting issues of your 1970s icebox. What's most extraordinary is that Ferrari isn't alone in this peculiar form of automotive counterfeit. Hyundai has already implemented such a system in the Ioniq 5 N, complete with artificial rev limiter that cuts power at a virtual 8,000 rpm. Their engineers have programmed in simulated turbo lag, for heaven's sake. Turbo lag! That thing we spent decades trying to eliminate! Ferrari's system will be more sophisticated, of course. The patents suggest that drivers will be able to use the familiar paddle shifters behind the steering wheel to manually control these fake gearshifts, just as they would in current Ferrari models. One imagines the company's test drivers sitting in prototypes, pulling on small pieces of carbon fiber that aren't connected to any actual gears, smiling nostalgically as the computer momentarily reduces power to create the illusion of a mechanical process that isn't occurring. The Sound And The Fury: Ferrari's Virtual Orchestra The second patent is perhaps even more revealing. It details an audio system with both interior and exterior speakers that will reproduce a digitally generated sound corresponding to a virtual engine and transmission model. According to the patent, the sound could be "historical, modern or futuristic, adrenaline-filled, [or] relaxed" depending on driver preferences. This means that your multi-million-dollar Ferrari EV might be able to sound like a 1960s Ferrari 250 GTO, a modern F8 Tributo, or perhaps something out of "The Jetsons." The system will also have specific sounds for those fake gearshifts, presumably a digitally remastered "kerchunk" that costs more to develop than the entire sound system in a Toyota Corolla. The patent also outlines methods for recording the sounds of internal combustion cars, which suggests Ferrari might be creating a library of its greatest hits. Imagine selecting "1984 288 GTO" from your infotainment system, or perhaps "1995 F50" if you're feeling particularly nostalgic. It's the automotive equivalent of a tribute band – impressive in its own right, but not quite the real thing.Dodge has already ventured into this territory with its "Fratzonic Chambered Exhaust" system on the new Charger Daytona EV, which is essentially a very elaborate noise-making device. But Ferrari's approach goes further by combining fake sounds with fake power delivery characteristics and fake gearshifts. It's a comprehensive suite of artificial experiences designed to trick your senses into thinking you're driving something that you're not. The irony here is palpable. Ferrari, a company that built its reputation on automotive authenticity and mechanical purity, is now patenting ways to create artificial driving experiences. This is the same Ferrari that resisted paddle-shift transmissions until they became too good to ignore, the same Ferrari that held onto naturally aspirated engines while everyone else went turbocharged, the same Ferrari that CEO Sergio Marchionne once said would never, ever build an SUV (before they built the Purosangue). Yet here we are, with Ferrari preparing to launch its first EV next year, complete with artificial engine noises and pretend gearshifts. The car will undoubtedly be fast – electric motors guarantee that – and it will almost certainly handle with the precision we've come to expect from Maranello. But will these electronic simulations be enough to make it feel like a proper Ferrari? In some ways, this technological trickery represents the existential crisis facing all performance car manufacturers in the electric age. Without the complexity and character of internal combustion, how do you differentiate a supercar from a fast family car? If a Tesla Model S Plaid can outaccelerate most Ferraris for a fraction of the price, what are you really paying for with the prancing horse badge? The answer, it seems, is elaborately simulated nostalgia. And perhaps that's not entirely a bad thing. After all, we humans are emotional creatures. If these artificial systems can trick our brains into experiencing the same rush that comes from a real V12 and a proper manual gearbox, does it matter that it's all ones and zeros rather than pistons and cogs? Ferrari clearly thinks not. And given that their first EV is set to debut this year with deliveries beginning in 2026, we won't have to wait long to find out if they're right.
