Comparing the Regera to the Jesko When Koenigsegg built the Regera back in 2016, the aim was that it sat in a category above Koenigseggs standard hypercars like the Agera. Regera literally translates “to rule” and certainly that’s what the 85 lucky customers who purchased this monster expected. The one Koenigsegg to rule them all. Certainly, it was and still is the most advanced car Koenigsegg have ever built. Its 5.0l twin-turbo V8 is paired to a triad of Electric Motors (2 YASA 750Rs and 1 YASA P400) making this Koenigseggs only hybrid hypercar. The result with unique bespoke E85 fuel is 1757 horsepower, 1,475 lb-ft of torque and 1590kg of weight. To manage this firepower, Koenigsegg fitted the Regera with a unique 1-speed fixed gearbox to better manage the torque from the enormous electric motors and keep the car stable at high speeds. Koenigsegg claims the Regera will launch from 0-62mph in 2.8 seconds and that flat out, it’s so fast, the top speed was limited to 250mph. Named after Christian Von Koenigsegg’s father, this car came in two forms. The track-focused, super hardcore, Attack variant and the car used in this drag race, the Aboslut, is specifically designed for Top Speed runs. As a tech marvel, the Jesko is nowhere near as advanced as the Regera. It merely featured a 5.1L Twin-Turbo V8 notpaired with any electric motors. The result of this was still a fairly monstrous 1600 horsepower and 1106 lb-ft of torque.However, due to the lack of electric motors, the Jesko Absolut was significantly lighter, weighing 1,390kg. As a result, despite the lack of a hybrid drive, the Jesko was noticeably faster. With power sent through a bespoke, fast-shifting 9-speed multi-clutch unit, 0-62mph was achieved in 2.6 seconds and Koenigsegg claim the top speed to be 310mph. In fact, in 2024, the Jesko Absolut broke the Regera’s 0-250-0 mph record with an astonishing time of 27.83 seconds. Humiliation in a Drag Race Going into this, one would expect that despite less power and torque, the lighter Jesko Absolut, with its proven records and claimed higher top speed to just about beat the technically advanced Regera. But what no one expected was how big the difference would be. For not once, not twice, but at least five times, in a standing start race, the Jesko completely humiliated the Regera. Not just in the initial acceleration either, once the cars got into their stride, the gap widened and the Jesko continued to pullaway. Things were even worse in the rolling race, where the gap was even greater. But not only was the Jesko faster in a straight line, despite the regen tech of the Regera, under-braking, it proved to be superior too. In fact, the only time the Regera did win something was when the Jesko was in an incorrect gear. This is astonishing considering the Regera was driven by Koenigsegg’s test driver Markus Lundh and the Jesko by lesser-experienced motoring journalist Mat Watson. Why the Jesko is superior? So why did the less powerful and lower torque figured Jesko humiliate the monstrous Regera? Well, there are two reasons for this. Firstly, it’s the gearbox. Because the Jesko uses a more traditional 9-speed manual, it means the car is always in the correct gear when you put your foot down. This is where the Regera’s one-speed proves to be a massive hindrance. Secondly and more importantly its power to weight. Despite the Regera having more horsepower, the Jesko weighs 200kg less. As a result, the Jesko’s power-to-weight of 1151 horsepower per tonne is significantly superior to the Regera’s 1105 horsepower per tonne, which further explains the difference. But not only is the Jesko a faster car, it’s also a more exciting car. The video revealed it to be much louder and that noise with the excitement behind changing gear and the acceleration just delivers a more exhilarating experience.
