Analogue Automotive has delivered the first Lotus Elise VHPK, a Series 1 Elise rebuilt around a carbon fiber body and a single central driving position.It weighs under 600 kilograms, or 1,323 pounds, and runs a tuned 1.9-liter K-Series producing 250 hp, for 400 hp per tonne.Just 35 will be built, each starting at 350,000 pounds, roughly $472,500, before tax and including the donor car. Colin Chapman's founding principle was simple: add lightness. Simple, yes, but also inconvenient, because lightness turns out to be the single most expensive commodity in the car industry. Every gram you remove costs money, and the last few hundred grams cost genuinely absurd money. Which brings us to the Lotus Elise VHPK, a car that costs roughly 17 times what you would pay for a tidy Series 1 donor, and yet sits on the very same bonded aluminum tub. Analogue Automotive has just handed the first one to its owner, and predictably the internet has spent the week explaining why the price is madness. The internet, as usual, has not looked closely enough. Where the Money Goes, and Why That Seat Is in the Middle CEO Steffen Dobke refuses to call this a restoration, describing it instead as a complete reimagining of the original S1 formula, that famous pairing of the Type 111 chassis with a high-revving, lightweight K-Series engine. Every VHPK begins as a Series 1 Elise before being stripped back to the bare aluminum tub, then rebuilt around a carbon fiber body, a lightened fuel tank and a lightened wiring loom. The arithmetic explains the ambition. A standard Elise S1 weighed a shade over 700 kilograms, or 1,543 pounds, with 120 hp. Even the hotter Sport 160 came in around 770 kilograms, or 1,698 pounds, dry, with roughly 158 hp. The VHPK undercuts both by well over 100 kilograms while adding serious power, which is Dobke's basis for calling it superior in every way to a new S1. That power comes from a tuned 1.9-liter version of the old Rover K-Series, enlarged from the donor's 1.8, now producing 250 hp. The result is 400 hp per tonne, a figure that lands squarely in supercar territory, delivered through a close-ratio five-speed manual and a limited-slip differential. Carbon-ceramic brakes with 300-millimeter, or 11.8-inch, front discs handle the other end of the equation. None of this is aimed at comfort. All of it is aimed at track days. And then there is the seat. One carbon fiber bucket, positioned dead center, borrowed from single-seat racing and from the road car that made the layout famous, the McLaren F1. This is not a trim decision. It forces a full redesign of the pedal box, the steering column and the bulkhead, which is precisely the sort of engineering that converts a restomod into a six-figure proposition.Whether the central position genuinely improves the drive or simply provides an excellent conversation opener will only be settled on track. Analogue Automotive is betting that 35 people will pay handsomely to find out. Given how these things have been going lately, that seems a reasonably safe wager.
