Lotus will unveil their new concept electric sports car next week.Named Theory 1, this will supposedly tease what the future Type 35 all electric sports car will look like.It also reminds us that the Emira, Lotus’ final petrol powered sports car will soon depart from the range.On September 16th, Lotus unveils their new Theory 1 all electric sports car Back in 2021, Lotus announced that by 2028, their entire fleet would go fully electric. Following the blistering all-electric Evija hypercar, four new electric models would make up their range by 2026. These include two SUVs (Type 132 and 134) and a saloon (Type 133) that will be built in China alongside the firm’s first all-electric sportscar (Type 135) built in Hethel. So far the firm has released the Eletra (Type 132) and Emeya (Type 133) with plans for the next SUV (Type 134) to be released next year. And just recently Lotus announced they would unveil a new concept electric sports car, next week named Theory 1. Two videos have been released on Instagram under the titles “Analogue” and “Natural”. Both videos reveal the car will have a sleek rear design with an air brake alongside a square steering wheel with paddles. These designs are of direct inspiration from the Evija hypercar. Whilst not directly stated, the Theory 1 is set to be the groundwork for the Type 135. This will be unveiled sometime next year with promised first deliveries in 2027. All of which spells doom for the Emira, Lotus’ final petrol-powered sportscar. Lotus have promised to keep the EV as light to embody the spirit their founder Colin Chapman fully believed in, “Subtracting weight makes you faster everywhere”. Whilst there are reservations over the car going electric, it is pleasing to know Lotus understands its core appeal and what made their cars special. It’s also fitting considering this car’s key rivals, the Porsche Boxster and the Alpine A110 are also confirmed to go all-electric.
