Formula 1-Inspired Aerodynamics: Born from Racing DNA McLaren has long been at the forefront of ground-effect aerodynamics, and the W1 is no exception. Every inch of this car has been meticulously designed to optimize airflow, reduce drag, and increase downforce. The result was the most advanced aerodynamic platform created for a McLaren road car. All McLaren’s have impressive aerodynamics, but the W1 is on a completely different planet. While the W1’s powertrain is a marvel, its aerodynamic design is just as revolutionary. McLaren’s boffins spent over 350 hours in the wind tunnel, testing 5,000 points to perfect the W1’s aerodynamics. The W1s body is constructed almost solely of carbon fibre resulting in a dry weight sum of 1399kg. At its core is the Aerocell monocoque chassis which differs greatly from the traditional carbon fiber tubs used in previous McLarens. It is shaped to maximize ground-effect aerodynamics, featuring integrated seating and raised footwells like those in a 2016 Ford GT. This, in turn, saves weight and enhances the driver’s connection to the car. One of the more striking features of the W1 is its Anhedral gull-wing doors, which replace the old butterfly dihedral doors of previous McLarens. These unique, roof-hinged doors are crucial in enhancing the car’s aerodynamics. Their design curves downwards as they open, resulting in a smoother airflow transition over the car’s surface. This helps reduce turbulence, particularly in the critical area between the front fender and the cockpit: a known trouble spot for air resistance in most high-performance cars. Furthermore, they allow clean airflow around the car’s side profile, which improves stability at high speeds. This clever engineering also allows air to be directed more efficiently toward the active rear wing. Which in turn enhances downforce and keeps the W1 planted during extreme driving conditions. But the biggest standout feature of the W1 is its Active Long Tail rear wing. This wing, powered by four electric motors, extends 300mm rearwards when in Race mode to increase downforce without adding drag. When paired with the active front wing, the W1 can generate up to 1,000kg of downforce at high speeds: (350kg at the front and 650kg at the rear). Put the W1 in Race mode and it lowers by 37mm at the front and 17mm at the rear. This creates a stable platform for cornering at extreme speeds. The result is a supercar that corners with the agility and precision of an actual F1 car. Epic Power: The All-New V8 Hybrid Powertrain At the heart of the McLaren W1 is an all-new twin-turbo 928 horsepower 4.0l V8. This MHP-8 engine was developed by McLaren’s long-time engine-developer Ricardo and produces 664 lb-ft of torque. What’s staggering is this unit is brand new from the ground up. It features a lightweight aluminum block and plasma spray-coated cylinder bores. The result is a redline of up to 9,200 rpm. It also incorporates a 350-bar gasoline direct injection (GDI) system and port fuel injection to enhance efficiency without compromising on power. To further enhance performance, the W1 uses a pair of twin-scroll turbochargers optimized for delivering peak power and torque throughout the rev range. This results in more power being generated at lower RPMs to improve response times. The result is the highest specific power output of any McLaren engine: 233hp per liter. Equally impressive as the actual new engine is the new electric motor or E-module. Weighing only 20kg and fitted with a 1.38kWh battery, this motor can spin up to 24,000 RPM. This results in an additional 347 horsepower and 324 lb-ft of torque. This not only boosts throttle response but also allows for an electric-only range of up to 1.6 miles. It also contributes to a specific output of 23 hp/kg. The result of this combination is a whopping 1275 horsepower and 988 lb-ft of torque, which is then transferred through an 8-speed SSG dual-clutch gearbox via a hydraulic e-differential. The result is a power-to-weight ratio of 911 hp per tonne, significantly more than any hypercar that’s come before. 0-62mph takes an unbelievable 2.7 seconds and it continues accelerating until it reaches its limited top speed of 217mph. Even more impressive is that it does this by being only rear-wheel drive. A brave move considering most plus 1000 horsepower hybrids are all-wheel drive. However, clearly, McLaren understands driver involvement is as key as the car itself. Hence why this car has traditional hydraulic steering rather than electronic. Because more important than the visual strike of a hypercar is the feeling the driver gets behind the wheel. How does the MHP-8 compare to its predecessors? Ever since McLaren Automotive launched in 2011, they have formed a partnership with Ricardo to develop their twin-turbo V8s. The first unit, named M838T debuted with the MP4-12C. This 3.8L flat-plane crank unit developed 592 horsepower and was considered the most efficient and economical supercar engine on the planet at that time. Its design emphasized lightweight performance and efficiency. It achieved a redline at 8500 RPM and 80% of its torque available as low as 2000 RPM. This made it highly responsive even at lower revs. The unit was modified for the P1 in order to effectively pair it with the 4.7kWh electric motor. This variant saw improvements in cooling, durability, and electric motor integration for peak performance under extreme conditions. The result here was over 727 horsepower, the most powerful this unit has ever delivered. In 2017 McLaren released the M840T, an evolution of the M838T. 41% of the components in this 4.0L flat-plane crank unit were brand new including new twin-scroll turbochargers with low-inertia titanium-aluminium turbines. One significant change was the longer stroke, up from 69.9 mm to 73.5 mm. This engine debuted with the 720S and developed 720 horsepower and 568 lb-ft of torque and redlined at the same 8500rpm. This engine set the bar with greater throttle response, more power, and significantly reduced emissions. However, the biggest advancement has come with the brand-new MHP-8. It not only crushes its predecessors in power but also efficiency and weight. It takes the ingenuity and innovation of the M838T and the raw power of the M840T and dials it up to 11. It is a culmination of all of McLaren’s experience on the road and track brought together in one perfect package. Conclusion: The Leader of the Hypercar Realm The McLaren W1 has truly set new boundaries for the world of the epic. From its epic V8 hybrid powertrain to its Formula 1-inspired aerodynamics, every element has been meticulously crafted to deliver a driving experience like no other. It’s clear the likes of the Ferrari F250, Aston Martin Valhalla, and whatever Porsche’s new all-electric hypercar will have to truly be diamonds to better this. For right now from an engineering perspective, the W1 is the king of the hypercar realm.
