The new BMW M5 Wagon The new 2025 BMW M5 touring comes shortly after BMW released the M3 touring… could we see other M-series Tourings down the line? New M5 Touring EngineEarly this month, we woke up to the news that BMW was testing a new touring version of the M5 on icy roads in the US. The car was none other than a touring version of the M5 — only the third M5 touring model to date. And it’s been a hot minute since we last saw an M5 touring — the last one was the E60 from way back at the turn of the century. The new high-performance wagon will debut soon, along with a new M5 sedan. BMW confirmed both body styles for a U.S. arrival, likely as 2025 models. M5 Design FeaturesThe prototypes look similar to earlier test vehicles for the regular 5-Series Touring. However, there are key M features. You'll notice pumped-up fenders, quad-exhaust tips, and a large wheel and brake package. These confirm that it's the M5 Touring. A yellow warning sticker also tells us that the prototypes have an electrified powertrain. Powertrain DetailsThe powertrain likely includes a twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V-8 and a single electric motor. This setup should give more than 700 hp. The same setup is in the 2023 XM SUV, which delivers 738 hp in the top XM Label Red model. So, you can expect similar or slightly lower performance in the M5 Touring. Electric OptionsFor those who prefer electric power, the new 5-Series offers the i5 variant. You can order it in the i5 M60 xDrive grade. This version has a dual-motor, all-wheel-drive setup with 590 hp. The electric I5 also comes in wagon form, as a touring edition. However, the i5 wagon is not expected to hit the US market. Future M CarsBMW M is also working on dedicated electric M cars, but the timing is not clear. They are testing a four-motor electric powertrain. There are rumors that the new M5 will offer an electric powertrain at some point. CompetitionWhen the M5 Touring arrives, it won't have much direct competition. Mercedes-Benz AMG doesn't offer an E 63 Wagon in the U.S. anymore. We are also eagerly waiting for the Audi RS6 Avant, which is their wagon version of the RS6. Audi has confirmed a successor, which is probably going to be called the RS7 Avant. However, again, that model is not confirmed for the US. A smaller RS 5 Avant is in the works but not confirmed for the U.S. either. ConclusionBMW also offers an M3 Touring. It's been on sale overseas since 2022 but won't come to the U.S. The M5 Touring will be a rare high-performance wagon in the U.S. market, providing an exciting option for enthusiasts.
