Audi has launched a new electric vehicle (EV) brand exclusively for China, marking a renewed collaboration with the Chinese automaker SAIC. Named simply “AUDI” and distinct from its traditional line by omitting the iconic four-ring logo, this new brand aims to attract China’s younger, tech-driven buyers. The AUDI E concept—a sleek electric estate—leads the lineup and offers a glimpse into the brand’s upcoming releases: a sedan and an SUV, set for launch in 2026 and 2027. By re-entering China’s competitive EV market, Audi is aiming to reclaim its pioneering position through advanced, “intelligent connected vehicles” tailored specifically for the Chinese market. Dual Motor Setup for Speed and RangeThe AUDI E concept’s impressive dual-motor system delivers a combined 764 horsepower (570 kW) and 590 pound-feet of torque, powering all four wheels through Audi’s renowned quattro all-wheel-drive technology. This setup propels the concept from 0 to 62 mph in just 3.6 seconds, offering the exhilarating acceleration typical of Audi’s high-performance models. Built on the Advanced Digitized Platform co-developed with SAIC, the AUDI E concept boasts an 800-volt electrical architecture, enabling rapid DC charging. In just 10 minutes, the vehicle can replenish over 230 miles (370 km) of range, rivaling the convenience of conventional fueling stops. A 100-kWh battery offers an estimated range of 435 miles on China’s CLTC cycle. Measuring 4,870 mm in length, 1,990 mm in width, and 1,460 mm in height, with a 2,950 mm wheelbase, the E concept features a spacious cabin that maximizes comfort and interior room. Additional engineering highlights include four-wheel steering, adaptive air suspension, and China-specific advanced driver assistance systems. Modern Aesthetics with Classic Audi InfluenceThe AUDI E concept brings an elegant, minimalist design tailored to the preferences of Chinese consumers, with influences from Audi’s design heritage. Its exterior features smooth, clean surfaces and a unique front end, inspired by the E-Legend EL1, an homage to the iconic Audi Sport Quattro. A distinct “loop” design houses lighting, sensors for automated driving, and aerodynamic elements, giving the car a square-jawed, modern look. The lighting motif carries over to the rear, emphasizing a cohesive design language. Inside, the cabin reflects Audi’s commitment to comfort and innovation. A 4K pillar-to-pillar screen spans the dashboard, with the outer displays functioning as digital side mirrors, while a touchpad below the screens allows seamless navigation. The use of white fabric, light-colored wood, and ambient purple lighting creates an airy, calming atmosphere. Illuminated wood and microfiber trims on the doors feature a three-dimensional lamella design inspired by modern architecture, merging natural materials with advanced technology. Personalized In-Car ExperienceThe AUDI E concept’s operating system AUDI OS combines digital and physical interactions, with top-level information display for quick access to key details. An in-car app ecosystem, complete with a dedicated app store, offers a range of entertainment options and services, while facial recognition personalizes settings based on each user’s preferences. The AUDI Assistant, an AI avatar at the center of the dashboard, provides voice and touch controls for effortless interaction, displaying visual feedback during use. Positioned below, the touch-sensitive AUDI Control bar adapts contextually to content displayed on the main screen. Through smartphone integration and personalized profiles, AUDI OS transforms the cabin into a truly interactive and responsive space for all occupants. Joint Innovation Drives Audi’s EV Expansion in ChinaAudi’s partnership with SAIC marks a new chapter in its China strategy, accelerating the development of three electric vehicles exclusively for the Chinese market. Built on the jointly developed Advanced Digitized Platform, these models will debut in the mid-size and full-size segments, with the first set to launch in 2025. According to Audi CEO Gernot Döllner, “the automotive industry is undergoing the largest transformation in its history. With our partnerships in China, we are playing a decisive role in this transformation.” This collaboration is aimed at meeting the demands of China’s younger, tech-focused luxury consumers, whose expectations for connectivity and automated driving surpass global standards. SAIC’s established technology ecosystem and speed in development—reducing time-to-market by over 30%—are integral to the partnership’s success. “Our cooperation reflects the spirit of ‘the best of both worlds’ and has been set up to jointly organize development, purchasing, production, and sales,” explains Fermín Soneira, the newly appointed CEO of the AUDI division, who brings 25 years of Volkswagen Group experience to lead the project.
