It's a marketing effort meant to highlight the obvious benefits of an electric motor's virtually instant response, even when the vehicle is a porker. But in any other performance metric, the 918 Spyder runs circles around the Cayenne Turbo Electric, which is what happens when you compare a mid-engined hybrid supercar to a three-row luxury SUV. If we're talking strictly about zero to 62 mph performance, the electric Cayenne still isn't Porsche's quickest. That title belongs to the Taycan Turbo GT with the Weissach Package, which does the sprint in 2.2 seconds. The less hardcore Taycan Turbo S is also quicker than the luxobarge at 2.4 seconds. The Cayenne Turbo Electric does have a feather in its cap: the most powerful Porsche ever, with a ludicrous 1,139 horsepower. The only Porsche that could improve on these numbers is the Mission X. Should a 918 Spyder successor arrive as a pure EV, the targets are already set: the fastest road car at the Nürburgring, a 1:1 power-to-weight ratio, and more downforce than the 911 GT3 RS. These are properly ambitious targets that would require exceptional engineering to achieve in a battery-powered package. The drag race between the 918 Spyder and Cayenne Turbo Electric is entertaining marketing, demonstrating how far electric powertrains have progressed in acceleration performance. But it's also slightly disingenuous, comparing a 12-year-old hybrid supercar to a brand-new electric SUV in the one metric where electric motors have inherent advantages. The 918 Spyder remains the more impressive machine in virtually every other measure: handling, braking, track performance, driver engagement, and the glorious sound of its naturally aspirated V8 combined with electric motors. Still, the fact that a 5,831-pound SUV can match a 918 Spyder to 60 mph is genuinely remarkable, demonstrating the absurd acceleration capabilities of modern electric powertrains. Whether that makes the Cayenne Turbo Electric a better vehicle is debatable, but it's certainly faster in a straight line for the first few seconds. After that, physics and aerodynamics reassert themselves, and the lightweight supercar pulls away. Marketing ties aside, both vehicles are properly impressive engineering achievements that showcase Porsche's capabilities across wildly different segments.
