Well, those days are as dead as the manual gearbox, because now even the bitterest of automotive rivals are jumping into bed together faster than reality TV contestants. The latest potential automotive hook-up is truly mind-boggling. Nissan and Honda – two Japanese giants who have spent decades pretending the other doesn't exist – are now discussing the possibility of their halo sports cars sharing the same platform. Yes, you read that correctly. The next-generation Nissan GT-R and Acura NSX might be distant cousins under their sheet metal. This revelation comes from Nissan North America's Senior Vice President and Chief Planning Officer, Ponz Pandikuthira, who has clearly decided that corporate secrecy is overrated. Speaking to The Drive, he casually dropped the bombshell question: "Can we do a next-generation NSX and GT-R off the same platform, make the NSX authentic to what it stands for and make a GT-R authentic to what it stands for? So they are not clones?"Before you choke on your coffee, he went on to answer his own question with "I think we can." Which is executive-speak for "We're already designing it, but I'm not supposed to tell you that yet." Strange Bedfellows: When Godzilla Meets Precision Engineering The proposed collaboration is particularly fascinating because the GT-R and NSX are fundamentally different creatures. It's like suggesting that a rhinoceros and a cheetah could benefit from sharing the same skeletal structure. Pandikuthira himself highlighted this difference, describing the NSX as "super precise, lightweight, aerospace execution," while labeling the GT-R "a brute, but a sophisticated brute." He's not wrong. The NSX has always been the surgeon's scalpel to the GT-R's sledgehammer. One slices with precision; the other pulverizes with raw force. Both get the job done, but the clean-up afterward is very different.The NSX, since its inception in the early 1990s, has been about finesse, balance, and making the driver feel like Ayrton Senna (who, not coincidentally, helped develop the original). It's a car that whispers sweet nothings in your ear while dancing around a corner with the grace of a ballet dancer who's somehow also good at physics. The GT-R, meanwhile, approaches corners the way a bull approaches a china shop – with brutal effectiveness and a complete disregard for conventional physics. It's a car that doesn't so much defy the laws of nature as it threatens them with extreme violence until they cooperate. The current R35 GT-R is getting so long in the tooth it qualifies for a senior citizen discount, yet it still terrifies supercars costing three times as much.So how do these philosophical opposites share anything more significant than a cup of tea? The answer might lie in the magic of modular platforms and the fact that both cars are likely heading toward electrification. The Electric Elephant In The Room: Batteries Make Strange Partnerships We already know that Acura has confirmed an "NSX-type" electric sports car is coming. And Nissan has been dropping hints thicker than a GT-R's tire tread that the next Godzilla will be a hybrid. When you're investing billions in new electric or hybrid architecture, suddenly sharing development costs with your traditional rival doesn't seem quite so unthinkable. Electrification is the great equalizer in many ways. Electric motors don't have character the way combustion engines do – they're essentially the same technology whether they're in a Tesla or a golf cart. The difference comes in how you deploy them, how many you use, and how you tune the software controlling them. This means Nissan and Honda could feasibly develop a common platform with battery placement, motor mounting points, and basic suspension architecture, yet end up with two completely different cars. The GT-R could get more powerful motors, more aggressive torque vectoring, and suspension that prioritizes grip over comfort. The NSX could have a more balanced approach, with finer calibration, lighter components, and a focus on feedback rather than brute force. It would be like two very different bodybuilders who share the same gym equipment but work out completely differently – one going for mass, the other for definition. Of course, Pandikuthira was careful to clarify that this wasn't a confirmation that the GT-R and NSX are actually being co-developed, but rather a belief that "it can be done." That's the automotive executive equivalent of saying "I've got a great idea" after several pints at the pub. It sounds fantastic at the time, but whether it materializes in the cold light of day is another matter entirely The Honda-Nissan merger may have collapsed faster than a soufflé in a slam dancing competition, but the "strategic partnership" between the companies apparently lives on. According to Pandikuthira, Ivan Espinosa, now Nissan's CEO, "never stopped talking with Honda" even after the merger talks fizzled. "We need collaboration," Pandikuthira told The Drive. "We're going to need partnerships to deliver vehicles. I think partnerships are going to be a key part of our future." Which translates roughly to “Making new sports cars is eye-wateringly expensive and we can't afford to do it alone anymore.” If the success of Toyota and Subaru's co-developed 86/BRZ platform is anything to go by, there's hope that this partnership could actually work. Those cars share virtually everything yet somehow manage to feel distinctly different to drive. So the question isn't really "can they do it?" but rather "will they do it?" And more importantly, "will they mess it up?" Because if there's one thing worse than not getting new versions of the GT-R and NSX, it's getting watered-down, compromise-riddled versions that please accountants more than they please enthusiasts. But I, for one, am cautiously optimistic. If sharing a platform means these two Japanese icons can continue to exist in an increasingly hostile environment for pure sports cars, then I'm all for it. Just don't make them too similar, or we'll end up with the automotive equivalent of those twins who dress identically well into their 40s. And nobody wants that.
