A Legendary Victory During the Early 50s, the Carrera Panamericana was a border-to-border rally race on open roads similar to the Mille Miglia. It was widely regarded as one of the most dangerous races in history, with 27 deaths in total. As such, it was canceled indefinitely in 1955. However, to Porsche, the 1954 season of the Carrera Panamericana marks a momentous occasion. For this season, the iconic and beautiful 550 Spyder, driven by Hans Hermann finished third overall and secured victory in its sport category class (with cars having less than 1500 cc engines). This race not only inspired the “Carrera” name that has since become synonymous with the 911. It also cemented Porsche’s reputation as a motorsport champion. So to celebrate this occasion, Porsche Latin America customized a 718 RS Spyder in a truly special livery. Why was the 718 Spyder RS chosen? To begin with, let’s look back at the car that took Porsche to victory back then. You all know the 550 Spyder as the car that cut James Dean’s life short. However, behind the 917, it is one of the most iconic and revered Porsche race cars ever built. With its lightweight tubular steel chassis and aluminum body, the 550 Spyder weighed just over half a tonne. This meant despite only having a 1.5L 110 horsepower flat-four engine it could max out at 140mph. And due to its mid-engine construct, it was incredibly agile, out manoeuvring whatever Jaguar, Ferrari had to throw at it. Its spirit lives on today in the 718 Porsche Boxster that follows the same recipe. A mid-engine rear-drive layout, an open top two-seater experience, a lightweight body mostly constructed of aluminum, and powered by a 2.5l 4 cylinder. This particular 718 though is the Spyder RS which doesn’t use a four-cylinder. It instead utilizes the same 4.0L 493 horsepower 9000rpm screaming Flat-6 found in the GT3. The result via the 7-speed PDK gearbox is 0-62mph in 3.4 seconds and a top speed of 191mph. However, just like the 550, this Spyder RS's approach to lightweight construction and delicacy is still key. With a blend of carbon fiber, aluminum, and magnesium, this car weighs a little over 1.4 tonnes. And thanks to its mid-engine construction, it is as agile and tactful as a dragonfly. It is also the swansong for all petrol-powered Porsche Boxster, as its successor will be fully electric. So it’s only appropriate that before this car roars into the books of history, it be reminded of its roots. Of the car that laid for Porsche’s motorsport pedigree. A call back design to 1954 Visually, the 718 Spyder RS Panamericana Special draws heavily from the iconic 550 Spyder. Its body is painted in a bespoke Centenaire Silver, even on the carbon fiber aerodynamic components, a clear nod to the original 550. The Panamericana also features distinctive Carmine Red stripes on the rear fenders, and the number “55” painted in yellow on the doors and engine cover. This is a clear reference to Herrmann’s race-winning vehicle. Other aesthetic enhancements include Magnesium wheels, high-gloss black carbon ceramic brake calipers (PCCB), and TAG Heuer shields in Seal Grey. The 718 Spyder RS Panamericana Special effortlessly merges historic cues with contemporary design, ensuring that while the car honors its past, it remains a thoroughly modern masterpiece. Inside the predominantly black leather interior, the cabin features carmine red bucket seats with Carrera Panamericana embroidery on the headrests. Illuminated door sills highlight Porsche’s Sonderwunsch program with inscriptions of the Mexican flag and the 550 Spyder silhouette. An interesting addition to this particular car is the TAG Heuer watch mount, located under the center armrest. This has been specially designed to hold the TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph Tourbillon x Porsche Panamericana watch. Tag Heur has been a long collaborator with Porsche so to pay tribute to their first-ever victory, 255 examples of this bespoke watch were created. Its overall design matches the 718’s aesthetics, blending fine-brushed and polished steel with a curved sapphire crystal. True to Porsche’s ethos of giving back, the 718 Spyder RS Panamericana Special will be auctioned in 2025, with proceeds supporting non-profit organizations across Latin America.According to Camilo San Martín, Director of Porsche Mexico, this initiative “proves once again that Porsche’s values extend far beyond the automotive realm.” Honouring Porsche’s Past before their EV future The 718 Spyder RS Panamericana Special is more than just a special livery for some rich millionaire to brag about. It sits in a trilogy of cars that celebrates Porsche’s rich racing heritage in Mexico (alongside the 911 Carrera Panamericana and the 718 GT4 RS Panamericana). These one-off models are a final celebration of how far the combustion engine has brought Porsche before they transition into a fully electric world.
