Why the 911 Turbo Must Go Hybrid The 911 Turbo has recently celebrated its 50th Birthday and has been for the most part the ultimate benchmark performance car. A car that is quiet, usable, and daily on one occasion and then a killer of hypercars that cost triple as much on another. It defines the word performance. Trouble is performance is an ever-changing landscape over each decade. The current status quo of most high performance cars are having turbocharged engines being aided by electric motors creating performance hybrids. The Ferrari 296, Lamborghini Temerario, McLaren Artura and even a 805hp variant of the AMG GT all use hybrid tech turbocharged units. The 911 Turbo historically was a car that would wipe the smirk off the above cars’ faces. And given this huge change for most of its rivals, it’s only natural the Turbo would follow suit. However, the way it would deliver that power would be very different to any of its rivals. How does the system work: Follows the Carrera GTS t-Hybrid Previously the 992.1 Turbo utilised a 3.8l twin-turbo 572 horsepower flat-6 (641 hp in the Turbo S). But given the change in tech, it’s clear this unit has run its course. However, Porsche doesn’t want to go down the same route as everyone else and just fit an enormous battery to aid power. Instead it will utilise the hybrid system used in the 2024 992.2 Carrera GTS t-Hybrid. This car uses a 3.6l boxer turbo Flat-6 with an electrically driven turbocharger and an electric motor within the transmission, all supported by a compact high-voltage battery. This setup reduces turbo lag, aids responsiveness and provides over 60 more horsepower than the previous 992.1 GTS. However, the weight gain is only 50kg, significantly less than most performance hybrids, maintaining that delicacy and lightness the 911 has always revelled in. Porsche are looking to bring these advancements into the next generation 992.2 Turbo to again improve efficiency and performance. There’s also a chance they may even fit a small electric motor to drive the front wheels, in a similar setup to the 918 hypercar. The engine will potentially be slightly larger, around 3.8L to 3.6, given the high bar set by the Turbo’s rivals. Porsche will likely aim for the new Turbo S to have well over 800 horsepower, with the Turbo potentially having power between the 700 and 800 horsepower figure. There will also be enhanced Torque from the hybrid system which will also enable smoother and more responsive acceleration. 0-62mph is likely to be under 2.5 seconds and Top Speed will be north of 205mph. However, like the GTS T-Hybrid, the Turbo likely won’t have a switchable fully electric mode. Nevertheless, this hybrid advancement is necessary to ensure the new Turbo S not only meets the more stringent emission rules but also maintains its status as the ultimate expression in Benchmark Performance. Why the Carrera S is staying Petrol: A Sports Car not a Supercar So after hearing all the advantages of the Turbo going Hybrid, you’re probably wondering, why the new Carrera S is sticking to its 3.0L Twin-Turbo Flat-6. Sure it will receive tweaks with larger turbos and improved intercoolers but the result is likely to be a 10 hp increase over the 992.1 generation. However, you have to remember, at its core, the 911 is a Sports Car, not a Ferrari-chasing supercar. Its appeal comes from its handling and precision rather than outright speed. By sticking with pure petrol power, Porsche clearly shows that they care about what the enthusiasts want from their 911 rather than just chasing performance. Additional 992.2 updates for the Carrera S and Turbo Whilst visually like all past 911s, the upcoming Carrera S and Turbo models in the 992.2 generation will look identical to the variants that came before, they will feature significant interior and tech upgrades as seen on both the GTS and GT3. Externally we will see new LED headlights and a revised bumper. Internally the new digital display will replace the old analogue one as well as a stop-start button and 8-speed PDK gearboxes that are now a staple on all 992.2 generation 911s. One standout addition is the upgraded Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC) system, available in select models, which optimizes stability and control. Clearly there to balance out efficiency with fun in the 911 range. Yet more variety for the 911 The 911 range is no easy range to understand and these changes exhibited by both the new Turbo and Carrera S clearly illustrate why. Where one blasts to the future in a world of hybridised performance, the other stays traditional and follows the roots of what was intended. But that’s the point, the Turbo has always been a performance benchmark whilst the Carrera S has always been the easy-to-use sports car. Therefore it only makes sense the Turbo adapt to new tech to ensure it remains the hypercar car whilst the Carrera S remains a thoroughbred sports car for as long as it can. Because moving forward it’s likely all new 911s will adopt the hybrid tech of the GTS and Turbo. So for these next few years, let us at least revel in some pure Petrol Porsche Power.
