RML’s History: A Motorsport Powerhouse You’ve probably never heard of RML, but they’ve been around for over 40 years. They were founded in 1984 by Ray Mallock and have been a leader in world-class engineering particularly in Motorsport. Over the years they’ve helped secure victories in Le Mans and the British Touring Car Championship for the likes of Aston Martin, Nissan, and Chevrolet. And now, to celebrate 40 years of world-class engineering they’ve attempted to bring some flair to the 992 Turbo. The result is the P39 40SE. Le Mans Hypercar Inspiration: As much go as show Visually, the P39 40SE is as far removed from a 911 Turbo as possible. The rear of the car in particular is radical with more aerodynamic proficiency than ever. Clearly inspired by many iconic 90s-based Le Mans racers such as the CLK GTR and Porsche GT1. The car is finished in a ruby red exterior that is complemented by bespoke forged alloy wheel, measuring 20 inches at the front and 21 inches at the rear. Inside, the rear seats have been replaced with a roll cage, and the front seats are custom-designed with four-point safety harnesses. Though it isn’t just for show. The body of the P39 is constructed entirely from Carbon Fibre, replacing the aluminium panels used on the Turbo S. This not only reduces weight by a significant amount but makes the car significantly stronger. RML have not revealed an official weight figure, but expect at least a 100kg drop over the regular Turbo S. Also, every panel on the P39 is designed to cut through the air like a bullet. Every panel, from the front splitter to the rear wing, has been meticulously crafted to optimize aerodynamics, resulting in improved downforce and stability at high speeds. But as well as the body, RML have also focused on this car’s chassis. The wheelbase is extended by 25mm, and the car is 100mm wider at both ends. In addition, the RML P39 incorporates active aerodynamics, rear-wheel steering, and DRS (drag reduction system) technology. With the latter engaged, the rear spoiler adjusts itself to reduce drag by 56%. In addition, the active aerodynamics increase downforce by 35%. In its most aggressive setting, this car can generate up to 923kg of downforce at 177mph, 4.5 times more than that of a Turbo S. All these additions ensure the P39 40SE corners as brilliantly as it looks. Making the Fast even more Rapid: The Performance Upgrades The P39 40SE has the same engine as the regular 992 Turbo S, a 3.8l twin-turbocharged flat-6, slung out over the rear axle. However, this engine has been meticulously tuned with upgraded turbos, manifolds and intercoolers. The result of all this is a monstrous 900 horsepower and an enormous 738 lb-ft of torque. Engage launch control via the 8-speed PDK gearbox and the results are mesmerising. The top speed is the same as before 205mph, 0-62 now takes 2.4 seconds. And thanks to the upgraded chassis and carbon fiber brakes, it stops even quicker than it accelerates. The P39 40SE is so fast, that RML’s ultimate goal with it is a projected 6:45 lap time around the Nürburgring. 30 seconds faster than a Turbo S and 4.3 seconds faster than the current 992 GT3 RS. Yet the P39 40SE has a special “Tour Mode” which raises the ride height and softens the suspension. So it’s equally as capable of being a tourer as it is a racer, perfectly encapsulating the true spirit of the Turbo S. Hyper Exclusivity and Costly Price: The most unique 911 ever Now given this level of engineering and performance, you’d expect the P39 40SE to be as hyper-expensive and ridiculously rare. It indeed is, only 10 units will ever be created making it one of the rarest cars on sale right now. And with taxes added on, the price is as near as makes no difference, nearly $1,000,000. That’s a lot, especially considering a regular 992 Turbo S costs just over $200,000. But this car is so much more than just a 992 Turbo S unplugged. It’s a genuinely well-engineered, exotic lightweight, complete thoroughbred. It takes all elements of the Turbo S and exceeds them. Its carbon fibre body is way more impressive to behold than any 911. Its wider track, lighter weight, and super-active aero make it far more agile. Its 900 horsepower unit makes it ridiculously rapid and with only 10 made, it is truly a car for the exclusive. Only a billionaire would be able to afford this car, which is what RML set out to build. A 911 Turbo for the elite and you have to say, they’ve almost certainly done that.
