How the Spectre proved the Impossible There is no car quite like a Rolls-Royce. Unlike most exotic brands that focus on high performance and roaring engines, Rolls-Royce has consistently been the quintessential symbol of luxury, refinement, quietness, and supreme comfort. No other brand, not even Bentley, can match the degree of luxury, comfort and refinement offered by Rolls-Royce. 2023 marked a pivotal moment for the brand with the launch of its first fully electric vehicle, the Rolls-Royce Spectre. The Spectre’s smooth, quiet, and restrained electric powertrain encapsulated everything we know and adore about Rolls-Royce. Rolls-Royce’s transition to EVs with the Spectre hasn’t earned the same heavy criticism that most manufacturers have faced. Going electric primarily removes the soundtrack we’ve loved and makes the vehicle exceptionally heavy. For Rolls-Royce, though, a brand that has built its 120-year-long reputation on quiet, luxurious, heavy barges, this felt more like an enhancement than a transition. It makes you wonder why Rolls didn’t use electric motors from the get-go. It’s no wonder the Spectre was met with overwhelming demand. With a waiting list that stretches well into 2025. Those still waiting will be thrilled to learn that Rolls will soon launch a Black Badge variant. This will gain more power and a blacked-out exterior. And if you don’t mind waiting a little longer, the Spectre is due for a refresh in 2027. The updates will likely include new battery technology, enhanced interior features, and slight tweaks to the design. The success of the Spectre has opened the floodgates for Rolls-Royce. The brand now plans to have a fully electric range by 2030. To lead this charge, two new models will be released within the next four years, alongside the Spectre, leading the way into Rolls’ EV future. New Models and Advancements in EV Tech The first new vehicle, launching in 2027, will be an all-electric SUV. This will be to the Cullinan what the Ghost is to the Phantom: a smaller, more compact, but still exceptionally luxurious package. A year later, it will be joined by a fully electric luxury saloon. Unfortunately, this will replace Rolls’ most iconic and greatest car. The legendary, luxurious, and remarkable, now 21-year-old Phantom. The first Roller was built under BMW’s ownership. This new saloon will certainly have its work cut out to live up to the high bar set by the Phantom. For these new models, Rolls-Royce has partnered with its parent company, BMW. Together, they will develop cutting-edge EV battery technology. This will not only significantly improve the range and performance of future models but also assist in faster charging times and higher efficiency. These advancements include new cylindrical cells replacing the older prismatic ones. This change should offer 30% more range than the Spectre’s current 264 miles. This technological breakthrough will position Rolls as a world leader in achieving a zero-emission future, alongside its status as the ultimate expression of luxury and refinement. Farewell V12 By 2030, Rolls-Royce has confirmed that it will produce a range of solely electric vehicles. This commitment will ultimately spell doom for the company’s current V12. This is a sad moment, as the V12 has become a staple of the brand since BMW’s acquisition in 1998. That being said, Rolls-Royce has, in the past, gone through decades of using a particular engine configuration before changing it. So, the loss of the V12 is not as heartbreaking as it would be if, say, Ferrari stopped building a V12 (not that that’s ever going to happen). Rolls-Royce Leads the Charge in Luxury Electric Vehicles Unlike some competitors who have backtracked on similar pledges due to market challenges, Rolls-Royce remains steadfast in its dedication to an all-electric future. With the new electric saloon and luxury electric SUV set to join the Spectre, Rolls is currently leading the charge in luxury EVs. If any brand has benefitted from this shift to fully electric vehicles, Rolls-Royce is number one. This shift is not only a natural fit for the brand but also enhances the qualities on which it has built its reputation: luxury, refinement, and silence. With its transition to fully electric, Rolls-Royce has proven the impossible. That tradition and progress really can go hand in hand. Source: Motor Authority
