Instead of choosing the traditional red synonymous with Ferrari, he chose a design inspired by a fond memory from 1965. That year, Ferrari had just won the Formula 1 World Championship with John Surtees. The championship-winning car featured a blue and white livery representing Luigi Chinetti’s North American Racing Team (NART). This livery also was worn by a 250 LM, Piero’s favourite Ferrari of all time. “It was November 1965, and I had just started working at the company,” Piero recalls. “The inspiration for my Daytona SP3 came from that 250 LM. A nod to the past for a model with a very modern and sporty design.” Designing a Tribute: The Livery and Interior of Piero Ferrari’s Daytona SP3 The Daytona SP3’s exterior pays homage to both the 250 LM and 1965 champion-winning F1 car. Its exterior showcases a white metallic finish and a bold blue stripe running down the centre. Whilst its interior features a vibrant red upholstery, to mirror the unique 250 LM’s cabin. Piero Ferrari wanted this inspiration to extend beyond the car itself. He commissioned artist Enrico Ghinato to create a painting of the 250 LM. Designed by Pininfarina, it featured a sleek, aerodynamic body and a mid-mounted 3.3-litre V12 engine producing 320 horsepower and maxed out at 180mph. It achieved legendary status after winning the 1965 24 Hours of Le Mans. Only 32 were ever made. The Daytona SP3 is in many ways a road legal, modern day tribute to the 250 LM.
