Why Porsche Is Reconsidering Its EV-Only Strategy

When Porsche launched the Taycan in 2019, it took the world by storm. With the EV craze reaching its peak, the idea that Porsche, one of the world’s greatest sports car makers, was entering the world of EV, had certainly caused a stir and made many cancel their orders for brand new Teslas and switch over to Taycans.

It proved such a success that Porsche announced that by 2030, 80% of their model range would be fully electric. However, five years ago, only a select few car makers built EVs, making them niche and “cool.” Nowadays every manufacturer is building an EV and most are phasing out petrol power.

This added to the high cost of purchasing an EV and the lack of infrastructure to support a fully electric road network has resulted in a significant decline in demand for EVs. In recent years, sales of the Taycan have declined, especially in key regions like China.

According to Lutz Meschke Porsche’s CFO, a majority of Porsche’s clientele wants the soundtrack and rawness of an ICE rather than the silence and quietness of EVs.. As a result, Stuttgart’s finest have had to rethink their strategy.

Porsche's Plan to Integrate ICE Powertrains in Electric Models

Porsche on the face of it appears ahead of the game when planning this potential relaunch. The new 911 for instance features a revolutionary hybrid setup. Recently the company patented an all-new 6-stroke engine that improves efficiency whilst also assisting in more power. In addition, the manufacturer has invested $100 million in e-fuels to keep the ICE alive.

However, initially, all this investment for the ICE's future was banked on their most iconic model, the 911. But with this recent shift in strategy, more of their models could adopt this strategy, most notably the new electric Boxster.

This brings new challenges for Porsche. This new model was built on an electric architecture from the group up. Reconfiguring them to include ICE components would be an intricate, costly process that could take years.

In the interim, Porsche plans to “refresh” its hybrid range such as the new Panamera as a “best of both worlds” approach. This careful balance allows Porsche to meet current demand while keeping an eye on potential regulatory changes.

Porsche has also set up production lines at its Leipzig plant, capable of manufacturing EVs, hybrids, and ICE vehicles side by side. This approach gives Porsche the agility to produce a mixed line-up based on market trends, without needing to overhaul its production infrastructure. As Meschke put it, “Porsche will give the right answer to customer demand”.

A Risk to Keep Petrolheads Happy

One of the biggest challenges to Porsche’s new strategy is the proposed 2035 ICE ban in Europe, which prevents automakers from selling new ICE vehicles by 2035, pushing brands to focus solely on EVs. This could make it doubly difficult for them to build ICEs without having to pay significant fines.

However, by prioritising flexibility and listening to customer feedback, Porsche shows that it values customer preference over stringent rules by the EU. Contrast that to their town-based rival, Mercedes, who seem to be stringent on following these regulations and not caring about customer feedback.

Porsche’s strategy to delay its EVs is a testament to the dedication of a brand that truly cares about what its customers want. By balancing out the approach of simultaneously building ICEs, hybrids and EVs, they set a standard of how other manufacturers should approach the EV transition.

It is a reminder of why we as petrolheads hold this 76-year-old manufacturer in such high regard. For their motorsport heritage, their iconic models and their dedication to keeping us happy in the long term, it’s no surprise Porsche is one of the greatest and most beloved automotive brands in the world.
