Porsche is putting the electric Cayenne through its paces, and this time, it’s battling the cold in Sweden. The snowy test site is no playground—it’s where engineers make sure this high-performance SUV can handle anything winter throws its way.

The prototype is still wrapped in heavy camouflage, so the design remains a mystery. But these tests aren’t about looks. For EVs, freezing temperatures bring unique challenges. Batteries need to stay warm to perform, electrical systems have to hold up under stress, and even small components can freeze if they’re not built for the cold.

The Cayenne EV first appeared in the spotlight last April, sparking plenty of debate. Now, with winter trials underway, it’s clear Porsche is serious about making this SUV a standout.

The Cayenne EV Takes Shape

The Cayenne is going electric, and Porsche has been busy testing prototypes. The buzz started back in April when a mysterious SUV appeared, sparking debates about its identity.

Some thought it was Porsche’s rumored three-row EV, the K1, but it turned out to be the Cayenne EV. Since then, every prototype has offered a little more insight into what’s coming.

The latest models are still heavily camouflaged, making it tough to spot changes. Porsche hasn’t been in a rush to show off the final design, but a few details have slipped through.

The Cayenne EV’s production lights are now visible, and its silhouette is sleeker and more wagon-like, moving away from the boxier style of the current generation.

Underneath, the Cayenne EV rides on the same high-performance platform as the Macan EV. This 800-volt system means faster charging and more power.

If the Macan EV’s 630 horsepower is impressive, the Cayenne EV promises to take it further. Porsche has already shown it can break the 1,000-horsepower barrier with the Taycan Turbo GT.

Recently, the Cayenne EV was spotted tearing up the Nürburgring. Its acceleration was fierce, with the front lifting as it surged forward. It’s a preview of what’s to come.

The big question is whether Porsche can win over the market. Sales of the Taycan have been inconsistent, but the Cayenne EV might change that.

Cayenne ICE is Also Getting New Facelift

While all eyes are on Porsche’s electric Cayenne, the combustion-engine version isn’t being left out in the cold. Another set of spy shots reveal the Cayenne ICE is also getting a facelift, proving that Porsche is keeping its most popular SUV up to date.

The last big update for the ICE Cayenne came in 2023, with design tweaks and the return of V8 power for the Cayenne S. But this time, the changes seem focused on visuals, bridging the gap between the Cayenne’s original 2017 design and Porsche’s newer models.

Take a closer look at the prototype’s front fascia. The horizontal bumper vanes and pod fog lights are decoys, but the vertical slats under the headlights are the real story.

These active shutters are similar to those on the updated 992 GTS T-Hybrid, tying the Cayenne’s design to the latest 911 range. It’s a clever move, creating a family resemblance across Porsche’s lineup while keeping the Cayenne fresh.

So far, only the coupe version has been spotted, but the same updates are expected for the standard square-back model. Rear changes haven’t surfaced yet, but there’s speculation about an illuminated Porsche script on the hatch—a detail that could bring a modern touch to the SUV’s rear.

Porsche isn’t spilling the details on other updates just yet, but it’s likely horsepower will get a bump, as is typical with these refreshes. Currently, the Cayenne Coupe lineup offers everything from a base model to hybrids and high-performance trims.

Porsche Cayenne: Gas-Powered or Electric?

The Cayenne Coupe is getting another facelift, arriving in 2027 for U.S. buyers. It’s the second refresh since the Coupe launched in 2020, and Porsche seems determined to keep it fresh for fans of gas and hybrid engines.

At the same time, Porsche is preparing to launch the next-generation Cayenne as a fully electric SUV. While the gas-powered and electric models will ride on completely different platforms, they’re expected to share some design cues.

The electric Cayenne will use the same advanced platform as the Macan EV, while the updated Coupe sticks with its tried-and-tested system built for internal combustion and hybrids.

Porsche had initially decided to phase out gas engines for the Cayenne by the end of the decade. But with EV demand growing slower than expected, the company has decided to keep its V8 engines alive for a little longer. The Panamera is following a similar path, giving buyers more options in the coming years.

By 2027, Porsche will offer a choice between the updated gas-powered Cayenne and the all-electric version. Two SUVs, two powertrains, and two completely different approaches. Which one fits your garage?
